Early exposure to academics can help children perform better and feel more confident when they enter kindergarten, which is why preschool is so important. I have created some simple fall-themed resources to supplement your (and my own) toddler’s preschool learning. Whether it is incorporated into your curriculum, used as an introduction, or just for fun, these resources will help you and your child develop a love of learning. This week’s focus is: Letter E, Number 5, Star, Orange

Main Concepts Printable Packet
Print, cut, and staple/glue. (If your child is able, have them help.) Then, have them color or dot paint while discussing each preschool concept. Currently, we are working toward tracing the letters/shape and using dots to count on the number. You can do this all in one lesson or have your toddler do one page each day for each concept. *Print on cardstock to create flashcards for later!*
Preschool Learning Activities
Pumpkin Patch Color by Letter: E and Review
There are two different fall preschool worksheets for this activity depending on your child’s style or they can just be two different activities to practice letters and colors. One worksheet is more free coloring the areas with one letter symbol to guide the color choice. They can use crayons, paint, colored pencils, etc. The other is specifically for dot painting and helps more explicitly with fine motor practice and development.
For this activity, go over the directions and highlight the letter symbols with the corresponding color so your kiddo knows what color to color each letter area. Help them as they go and reiterate the letter and the colors for review. Along with a review of previous letters and numbers, this fall preschool activity also covers the color and shape of the week! It may be a good one to teach as the last concept.
For additional practice, use a puzzle, alphabet chart, or anything with words including the letter E and model pointing it out. Then help your child also point out the letter E. If they are picking it up quickly, have them do some on their own or find letter Es around the house.

Count to: 5
Use toys or blocks. Set out five of each toy or block and model counting to five. Then help your child also count out five as they move or touch the toy. This is a great opportunity to model counting fingers on your hand. We also so used a silly clapping toy to count fingers. If they are picking it up quickly, have them do some on their own of find items of only five around the house.

Shape Identification and Science: Star
Begin by going over the characteristics of a star shape; like that it’s made from straight lines, has five points, usually colored yellow, etc. Then review how a star is different from the shapes learned in previous lessons. Do a little find and seek with some objects around the house if you have them. We added some science learning to our activity by reading through the Usborne Lift-the-Flap book, What are Stars? that explains what stars actually are, things that are shaped like stars, and extra fun information relating to stars in an age appropriate way!

Recycled Jack O’ Lantern Craft: Orange
Start with a little color identification by coloring the main concept card splatter orange. Talk about the fall season and what we see a lot of this time of year or what changes (leaves, temperature, PUMPKINS!) Most pumpkins we see are orange just like this week’s color. Then move on to the fall preschool craft. Emphasize that combining the two primary colors red and yellow make orange and have them experiment mixing those paint colors together to color a pumpkin.
What you need:
- cardboard 4 drink holder (ours was from McDonald’s)
- red, yellow and black paint (+ orange if your don’t want to mix colors)
- stick/branch for stem
- hot glue
How to craft it:
- Start by cutting around the parts that hold the cups on the drink holder to get 4 “rounded” shapes.
- Then paint the pieces this your mixed (or orange) paint.
- Add the Jack O’ Lantern face with black paint.
- Glue the two pieces together to make a 3D pumpkin shape.
- Cut a small hole in the top to add the stick stem (you could also just hot glue it).
- Just for fun, display as art for the spooky season!
For additional practice, use a seek and find type book (or any picture book) to point out orange objects. Model until your child seems to be picking it up and have them continue on their own. They can then move on to find orange objects around the house to make it more challenging. We also used our orange net to scoop them up!
