I have to give credit to my mother-in-law for this one. She and my father-in-law are in the high risk category for COVID-19, so they can’t go out trick or treating with their grandkids like they have traditionally done without increased exposure. One of her grandsons, very sweetly, came up with this idea to trick or treat INSIDE their house. Grandma, of course, rolled with this idea and set it up with the other parents in our family. This includes my family and since we only have a 4 month old, Stay-at-Home Trick or Treating is the perfect way to get something out of Halloween this year!
The Set Up
- The kiddos will still dress up in costumes, bring candy bags, and get the “trick or treating” experience. Adults will wear masks.
- Each family will decorate a room, or area, in the house for all of the grandkids to “trick or treat” at.
- At each stop there will also be a Halloween themed activity for them to participate in.
- Our family will be making a creepy creature craft. 9 of our 12 nieces and nephews will be there, ranging from ages 4 to 15, so we chose something that would be fun for everyone! See our activity below.
- If you have a smaller family, you could incorporate more family activities to Stay-at-Home Trick or Treating to fill up time, like a scary movie and/or baking a spooky treat!
DIY Creepy Creatures- Halloween Craft for Kids
What’s more Halloween than creating creepy, fun little monsters? In our family Halloween is an important time to foster children’s creativity and bring their imagination to life! One easy and inexpensive way to do this is through crafting! Here some simple supplies (purchased from Dollar Tree and Amazon) that when put together can become whatever silly creature your kiddos can come up with!
Now, I am a new mom; I have a child; but TBH I am still just a big kid at heart so this was totally fun for me. I ended up going with a Spooky Mommy Spider because… that’s me! As long as you have enough variety in your supplies, kids of all ages will be able to come up with their own ideas. Being able to personalize their little monster will add sentimental value and will create a great memory and keepsake for Halloweens to come. I can’t wait to do this activity with my nieces and nephews on Halloween!
I chose these items and painted the pumpkin black. Regular sticky glue would work for most items. Make sure to supervise any kids with hot glue. Voilà! A creepy creature keepsake for next Halloween’s decor!
