Being a new mom can be scary and down right hard, but it’s also the most rewarding existence you will ever know. Despite the less than enthusiastic title, Motherhood is or will be your lifestyle; your new normal. All of the choices you make will be based off of this little addition to your world. So actually, Motherhood is a life changer and it’s freakin’ awesome! Let me tell you why.
Biology
You have literally created a person and that person can become someone amazing; all because you created them. They are an actual piece of you that will pass down your genetics generation after generation (if they so choose) that you grew inside your physical body; a body that was built for and changed in order to make this human. You and your child have a maternal bond that connects you two even before birth, through the hormone oxytocin. This is unique to Motherhood and is something that makes it so special. So when your new baby does a ‘toot,’ or drools all over your favorite blouse, or even rips out a chunk of your hair, you love it. The bond is unbreakable and they are part of you. It’s science.
Purpose
Motherhood gives you a new purpose in life. It is your responsibility to take care of this vulnerable new baby. So think of it like the best job ever. You put all of your time and efforts into this little human: teach them; create and manage their schedules; take care of them and their needs from hygiene to emotional wellbeing; foster good values; basically wear all the hats! Even when you’re exhausted and would rather be doing anything else, you do the work because that’s who you are now, their mom. You do it when they need it because innately you know it’s what you should do, but you also want to do it. You want to help this little one become the best they can be and you will! Through all of the challenges, your job as a mother is the most important job there is.

Fulfillment
All of the sleepless nights, the anxiety, the struggles; THEY’RE WORTH IT. Being a new mom will leave you fulfilled, even if you do nothing else with your life. It enhances activities like just going to a park, out to eat or a movie. With them, you’ll have a reason to do more things like the zoo, aquarium, vacations, expose yourself and child to real LIVING. Watching them grow and seeing their faces light up will encompass you with true happiness.
Having a new baby to give your life to makes you feel whole. They are like a piece of you that you didn’t know was missing. Motherhood fills your heart and makes a hard or otherwise mediocre life worthwhile. After all, you’re part of the progression of the world and are adding to the good in it. When you create and love this new baby, it is unconditional. They are your world and complete you.
In the past I thought I was “living my best life” and I was at the time. I had lots of friends, a career; I took opportunities to experience life, travel, and try new things. It’s great to have many memories to look back on fondly and now share with my daughter. However, out of everything I have experienced up to this point, Motherhood is literally the best. To be honest, I have no desire to live my past life and would take a snuggle session with my new baby, or even a whiny little Queen Crab moment, over a late night dancing at the club.
So when your feeling less than enthusiastic about Motherhood, just remember that you were meant for it and you’re doing a great job. Underneath it all, you have a love like no other and just focus on all the joy your child brings to your life.
