First of all, we absolutely love our house but what makes it a home is the effort and moments we fill it with. Creating a comfy and cozy environment for my family makes it our favorite place to be. This Fall season has been especially important for me because it is the first year having a family. My daughter was born in June. I want her to grow up excited about decorating the house for the holidays with me. I want her to have fond memories of seasonal colors and warm décor that she will carry with her as she grows up and makes her own home.
Creating a Warm Home for Happy Holiday Memories
In the past, I would just add some Fall home décor here and there because it doesn’t cool down until the very end of the year. We also live in an area of Arizona where colorful seasons are basically non-existent. So this year I decorated purposefully to bring the seasons to life for my daughter to enjoy. My front room is usually bright pastel with that farmhouse look; definitely not Fall. That being so, I took all of my normal home décor off of my windmill sill and replaced it with with small amount of Fall décor I have collected over the years. It came together beautifully and really warms up the whole sitting area. Presently, I like to sit there with the dogs and Ruby and soak in the Autumn vibes, pretending it’s actually cold out.
This spot is the only area with Fall décor and that is just fine. With Autumn being split by Halloween, it’s just the amount to easily put up and take down as needed. I didn’t have to spend too much money, and with the right placement, less actually looks like more. I used some Autumn leaf garland, a couple signs, and a few pumpkins from Michaels spread across the sill. Then, added a few dollar store trinkets and voila! Plus focusing on one space made it a more special area dedicated to the season, rather than a sprinkle of Fall décor that gets lost in the regular stuff or just looks plain weird. I save most of the house for my favorite home décor, CHRISTMAS!
Creating a Classic Christmas
This year we got the big tree. To be honest, I am perfectly happy with my favorite little skinny tree we’ve had forever, but this year we have Ruby. My husband and I have always fantasized about waking up on Christmas day and looking down the staircase to see a grand, beautifully lit Christmas tree. Now we want that for our daughter. We can’t wait to see her eyes light up every year and excitement overcome her at the view every Christmas morning; a memory of our home she will always remember. So you see, that’s the power of décor which makes a house a home.

This National Tree Company Artificial Christmas Tree | Includes Stand | Dunhill Fir – 9 ft is in our front room and is decorated in a vintage Christmas style with classic red, white, and green, plus some bright blue that matches some of the furniture in the room. To decorate, I used some actual vintage ornaments passed down from family and some new ones in old vintage appearance (from Walmart), string LED lights that change from white to colors, and some bright blue and regular burlap interlaced. Every night, the lights from our tree can be seen through our main window so the joy is felt from the very moment we get home.
My little skinny tree now resides in our family room where we spend most of our time. It is more of an antique rustic style. I keep the lights on the warm white setting and use a red plaid ribbon instead of tinsel. Most of the rustic ornaments are from Target. I love that this tree gives off just enough light to spread holiday cheer without affecting our TV watching experience. In that same cozy corner, I have a mix of new rustic décor and actual antique decorations from family; the new stuff from Target.
Personally, I like the older home décor because it is nostalgic. Some of my favorite memories are at my Granny and Papa’s house on Christmas Eve when I was little. I would go through the family room and look at every Christmas knick-knack, wreath, teddy bear, pillow, figurine and FEEL the holiday spirit. It was magical. Seeing those things now in our family room brings back those feelings. For this reason, we want the same for Ruby. It’s a way for her to experience the joy we felt at her age. As you can see, how we decorate has a real impact on how we feel. So put some thought into it this holiday season and think about it from the inside. My daughter and I have already started making memories thanks to some simple home décor from the heart.
