Happy National Superhero Day! When I was little, I LOVED to play dress up. I played with my mom’s old dresses, Halloween costumes, and homemade accessories. So, of course, I have already started creating dress up stuff for my daughter! Surprisingly, she doesn’t hate wearing things on her head or putting on clothes. Great news for me, but not every mom is so lucky. That’s why I created the Easiest DIY Superhero Cape for Toddlers craft; so you don’t have to spend a lot of time and effort making it, your kiddo can help make it, and it just clips right on the back of a shirt. Now you can play superhero or do a cute photoshoot (like I did)! Check out the cape tutorial and app I used for the comic book effects below.

What You’ll Need:
- 18X11″ foam sheets (3 colors)
- ruler
- stencil letters (if you don’t trust your lettering LOL)
- pipe cleaners
- clothespin
- scissors and hot glue
It’s a Bird… it’s a Plane… it’s a Tutorial on How To Make a Superhero Cape!
- Start this DIY craft for toddlers by cutting off the top two corners to make the cape’s shape using one foam sheet.
- Next, trace out and cut your letters onto the other foam sheets. My letters were 6″ tall and I used some old stencils I found at the thrift store.
- Make sure to stencil the letter backwards so you can have a clean front of the letter with no tracing lines.
- You can also freehand or use a Cricut machine. You can do virtually anything here. Be creative!
- Then use some pipe cleaners to make lightning bolts. Just bend in 4 places. Again you can do whatever with decorating. Some other ideas are hearts, foam sheet cutouts, coloring with markers, add stickers, etc.
- Glue all the pieces down with hot glue.
- Flip the cape and glue one clothespin to the top of the cape; finger grip sticking slightly out of the top.
- OPTIONAL: Hot glue a handful of pipe cleaners vertically down the bottom of the cape’s backside. This allows for some “wave-like” shaping if your little isn’t able to run fast enough to get it up.
- Lastly add a little matching headpiece to go with your cape using one of the corners you cut off at the beginning.
- Using scissors cut a slit in each corner to pull a pipe cleaner through.
- Tie them around.
- Add a pipe cleaner lightning bolt (or whatever embellishments you chose).
- You now have a little SUPER KID!
Superhero Photoshoot
Making things like this DIY Superhero Cape Craft for our toddlers gives us that little extra bond with them and creates some amazing memories. I hope you enjoy running around and taking pictures of your little super hero. Check out some of mine below. I used an app called Super Power Movie Fx – Magic Video Effects for the comic book-y effects. They turned out so cute! 🙂
