Looking for a simple and cheap shadow box to customize to your style? I have the solution and it’s from Dollar Tree! This little Dollar Tree DIY shadow box cost $2 to make using some of my standard crafting supplies from home. Can’t get any cheaper than that. Plus, I was able to make it match my existing décor.
Shadow boxes can be used for lots of things like pictures, dioramas, art show case, a display for sentimental or fragile items, but I needed one for my letters. Yes, my letters. Not my personal mailed letters from an old flame; the letters to my letterboard, silly. My letterboard came with a bag of Scrabble-like letters that are too cute not to display, so I thought a shadow box would be perfect for the job! Check out this easy craft below.

Shadow My Box:
- Start by cutting off the one of the small sides of the box to create an opening on the top.
- Paint the inside of the box. I only needed one coat because it was a solid color, plus I like a shabby, farmhouse look.
- Paint the outside of the box. I needed 2 coats to fully cover the design. Let dry in between coats.
- Remove backing and glass from your frame.
- Paint the frame and use a paper towel to wipe away some of the paint revealing more of the wood grain. Let dry.
- Once everything is dry, replace the glass in the frame without the backing.
- Hot glue the bottom edge of the box and line it up with the bottom of the frame so it will be even and stand on it’s own.
- Next, apply a line of hot glue to the sides where the frame and box connect. Let dry.
- You now have a cute Dollar Tree DIY Shadow Box!
- For a hanging shadow box, just hot glue the back on the frame to the back of the box, as shown.
Hope you enjoy crafting this easy Dollar Tree DIY Shadow Box and find something fun to do with it! 🙂
