Are you crafty on a budget? I’ve got you! Our kiddos birthdays are special. Every year we can’t believe they’re another year older; time flies! So to make it memorable for them (and us), we like to go all out. Sometimes it can break the bank trying to buy EVERYTHING, but if you make the time to get creative you CAN have it all. Check out some simple but epic space themed DIY Cardboard Party props (plus some inexpensive accessories) to tie your special event together.

DIY Cardboard Party Setup
To make a super easy space scene you really just need a few big props. That’s where the cardboard comes in. Now, we have access to huge pieces of cardboard through my husband’s work, but you can accomplish the same size by deconstructing boxes and taping the seams together with tape on the back.
For these projects you’ll need:
- LOTS of cardboard
- paint (colors to match your theme, ours was pink and black)
- brushes/sponges/rag works too for the big parts
- razor box cutter (preferred) or scissors
- clear packing tape and/or hot glue

Rocket Ship
- Cut and fold/roll on long rectangle into a tube-like shape and tape together. Ours was about 5 feet tall and 12 ft around.
- For the top, cut a round piece wider than the top of the tube. Then, make a slit from the side to the center. Overlap the sides of the slit to make a cone shape and tape it on top from the inside. Our was too tall for our liking so we just cut off the point at the top.
- Next, cut out a large hole for the door opening and smaller holes for windows.
- Take extra cardboard and trace around the holes. Cut a ring larger than the hole and tape (or glue) around each. This detail makes it look more realistic and better quality in my opinion, not necessary.
- Cut a rectangle piece of cardboard diagonally through the center to make the stabilizer fins for the back of the rocket.
- Time to paint! Our rocket was white with a neon pink top, fins and borders. We added black rivet circles along the borders for extra detail. We can get crazy with that stuff. LOL.
Moon Rocks Backdrop
- Layout, create a long rectangle shape of cardboard.
- Cut along the top edge in a wavy, random fashion.
- Paint white (or gray) and outline in black paint.
- Add black lines throughout the middle to look like moon rocks.
- Lean up against wall for a moon floor backdrop!
Foil Stars
- Cut star shapes out of cardboard in various sizes.
- Trace onto aluminum foil and cut out.
- Glue oil to star shape.
- Attach shiny new stars to the rocket with tape or hang them from the ceiling!
Store-bought Accessories
We did up the rest with some simple store-bought items to complete the whole space vibes. Here is a list of what we used:
- TWO THE MOON banner for the backdrop
- black streamers hanging from the ceiling
- black, pink, and silver balloons for the floor and inside the rocket
- medium sized number 2 balloon for photo ops
- space themed party bags and goodies
- shiny tablecoths
- galaxy print toddler unitard for the birthday girl

Other Ideas
We had some other ideas not pictured that added to the overall theme, such as serving pizza from “Pizza Planet”, moon/planet themed cake pops, rocket popsicles, alien out fit/tutu, beach balls painted like planets, glowstick ring toss, moon walk freeze dance, black hole bags game, and pin the spaceman on the moon.
Overall, just a few big props really made the theme come alive and didn’t cost us very much! I hope you had some inspiration reading through this DIY cardboard party post and are ready to make your next birthday shindig out of this world!
