Did you know early exposure to academics can help children perform better and feel more confident when they enter kindergarten? To help get your child ready (and my own) I have created some simple resources to supplement your toddler’s preschool learning. Whether it is incorporated into your curriculum, used as an introduction, or just for fun, these resources will help you and your child develop a love of learning. This week’s focus is: Letter D, Number 4, Heart, Green

Main Concepts Printable Packet
Print, cut, and staple/glue. (If your child is able, have them help.) Then, have them color or dot paint while discussing each preschool concept. Currently, we are working toward tracing the letters/shape and using dots to count on the number. You can do this all in one lesson or have your toddler do one page each day for each concept. *Print on cardstock to create flashcards for later!*
Preschool Learning Activities
Letter Search: Find the D
Use a puzzle, alphabet chart, or anything with words including the letter D and model pointing it out. Then help your child also point out the letter D. If they are picking it up quickly, have them do some on their own or find letter Ds around the house.

Count to: 4
Use toys or blocks. Set out one of each toy or block and model counting to four. Then help your child also count out four as they move or touch the toy. If they are picking it up quickly, have them do some on their own or find items in groups of four around the house. We used a special book about trucks to discuss how most things we ride have four wheels and pointed them out while we read.

Mixed Color FRANKEN-HEART Art
Start with a little shape identification activity using the heart shape page from the main concept packet. Ask if they recognize that shape on the FRANKEN-HEART printable. Describe again the shape of a heart and how it has curves on top and come to a point on the bottom.
For the Halloween themed printable activity, you can start by including some science discussion about the human body and how we all have a heart. Tell a child friendly story about how Frankenstein’s body was put together and he came alive when his heart started beating, which we all need to live. Then, have your kiddo mix blue and yellow paint together to make green, like Frankenstein, and color his hearts green on the printable. Emphasize that combining those two primary colors make green and have them experiment with different shades by adding more blue or yellow until it matches the Frankenstein. Just for fun, cut out hang as art for the spooky season!

Dump Truck Color Sort: Green Identification and Review
Practice more green identification through play by sorting objects into the colors they have learned so far! I used our brick table with red, yellow, blue and green sections but you can lay out different color papers to do the same thing. We used our dump truck to collect a color and dumped it into the section that matched. It’s also a good activity to review the number of the week, four, by talking about the 4 colors, 4 wheels on the truck, or even collect 4 objects for each color.
For additional practice, use a seek and find type book (or any picture book) to point out green objects. Model until your child seems to be picking it up and have them continue on their own. They can then move on to find green objects around the house to make it more challenging. You can also combine this with the activities from the other weekly concepts above!
