Happy Earth Day! What better way to celebrate than by facilitating some Earth friendly deeds and education for our kids. Below I have listed 10 easy ways to get our kids out of the house, thinking about their environment, and applying eco-conscious actions to their day. I have also included a FREE downloadable ‘Happy Earth Day Checklist’ for a tablet or to print (don’t forget to recycle once completed); the perfect activity for kids on Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day Checklist:
1. Draw the Earth on Your Driveway with Chalk
Spread awareness to your neighborhood by drawing a fun Earth Day message on your drive or walkway. Be creative and have fun so people take notice!
Talk about and brainstorm other safe ways to spread awareness of things that are important to your family and your community.
2. Turn Off the Lights and Use a Flashlight
Make it a fun Earth Day activity for kids throughout the day and night by using a flashlight or a head lamp for things you would normally use lights for.
Talk about how electricity affects the environment and light pollution. Brainstorm other ways to cut down on your use of electricity and other forms of sustainable energy like solar and wind power.
3. Pick Up 10 Pieces of Trash
With and adult, pick up trash in the yard, around the neighborhood, at a park, etc.
Talk about littering and what can happen if people throw their trash wherever they please versus taking a few steps to throw it in the trash. Inspire them to be a role model.
4. Spend 7 Minutes Looking at the Clouds
Enjoy Mother Nature. Lay out a blanket, take it all in and relax with your kiddo.
Talk about how clouds form, maybe the different types of clouds. Find clouds that look like shapes, animals, objects, etc.
5. Recycle 5 Things
Either find some things from the trash you picked up earlier or some additional things from the house to recycle.
Talk about what is recyclable (glass, plastic, paper, aluminum, etc) and what isn’t (food, grocery bags, packaging material). Look up the guidelines for your city together.
6. Watch a YouTube Video on the Effect of Plants on Earth
Here are a few:
- What is a Plant? All About Plants for Kids – FreeSchool
- Parts Of A Plant | The Dr. Binocs Show | Learn Videos For Kids
- Peep and the Big Wide World: Peep Plants a Seed (SO cute)
OR research and discover some new ones together!
7. Tell 3 Friends What You Learned from the YouTube Video
Call, set up a Zoom, or visit some buddies to tell them what you learned about the environment. Did you know you retain 90% of what you learn when you teach it to others!?
I am a firm believer that education can solve the world’s problems. The more you know, the better you do. 🙂
8. Plant a Seed
It can be a store-bought seed or a seed from a fruit in your fridge! Plant it in the yard or even just a cup on the windowsill.
Talk about how plants grow and what they need to survive, then connect it to how humans and animals need plants and Earth to grow.
9. Take One Deep Breath of Fresh Air
Embrace the life the environment provides you and slow down for a minute.
Talk about oxygen and carbon dioxide; how plants breathe in what we breathe out and vice versa. Talk about the importance of reducing pollution and how it affects us.
10. Hug a Tree
To respect the Earth, you must love the Earth. Show your love by giving it a BIG HUG!
Talk about respect for the Earth, the environment, nature, etc. Build and instill empathy for living things and what gives us life on this planet.

I hope you enjoy doing this easy Earth Day activity for kids and it brings you closer to each other and the world around you. 🙂
