Let me just say what we’re all thinking, MOVING SUCKS. Between the planning, packing, transporting and unpacking mess, relocating can be very stressful. I have moved several times in my adult life and was not always as prepared as I should have been. However, I did learn some things along the way that were extremely helpful when finally moving and settling into our forever home. Here are some simple tips, whether you are moving into an apartment, friend’s house, or your own home, to make your moving experience easier.
One: Make a Plan
Plan all of it AND write it down. Set up a realistic timeframe based on your move date to pack each room and/or area. Don’t try to squeeze it all in, instead give yourself plenty of time in case something happens and you do have to hurry. For me, I need at least one week for each room, maybe more now that I’m a mom. Use a planner to schedule out the packing, prioritize the order of your packing, and the day(s) you’ll actually be moving everything. Having your plan written down will help take the mental load off of remembering everything you have to do everyday and give you peace of mind that you’ll get it all done on time.

Two: Priority Pack
First things first; pack your toothbrush last! When you approach packing, stick to your plan and pack non-essential items first, meaning the things you rarely use on the daily. For us, it’s out of season clothing, accessories, gear, storage or things like that blender I never use. You may even find yourself getting rid of some of that stuff too. Regardless, save your toiletries, yoga pants, and the wine glasses (the essentials) for last.
Three: Label Everything
Opening every box just to find your left shoe can make unpacking from a move a nightmare, so do yourself a favor and label every box. Be as specific as possible without overdoing it. Use anything to indicate contents of the box, such as where they go or what they are. For example, use words like: office, nursery, master bathroom, or winter jackets, random cords, and glassware. Also add ‘FRAGILE’ to that last one. If you’re lucky enough to live in the Nashville area, you can even hire a company like Moving Solutions for long distance moving and they’ll label and organize your boxes for you! The goal is to work hard preparing so you can easily transition once you’re in your new home.
Four: Move Big Stuff First
Have you ever tried to lift a couch over a sea of packing boxes? When moving day finally comes, move the big stuff into your new home first. Being able to stack smaller boxes onto tables, chairs, couches, etc allows you to keep the walkways open and more organized, especially in a smaller place. Try your best to move the boxes right into their designated area too. It may seem easier to just get it all inside, but once the movers are gone, it’s just you and billion boxes to separate and move. So like I said before, work hard preparing so the unpacking is easy.
Five: Hire Help
I’m not above bribery when it comes to asking for help when moving, but in most cases it can still put a strain on friend and family relationships if it happens all the time or you have A LOT of stuff, like me. In the interest of time and efficiency, your best bet is to hire professionals like Moving Solutions to get it done and get out. Then you can focus on unpacking (yuck!) and decorating (yay!) the rooms you will be utilizing the most first. For us, that would be the bedrooms, bathrooms, and kitchen. Don’t forget to plan your unpacking in your planner, as well.
To recap, make a plan and write it down, prioritize and pack your essentials last, label everything, hire some help to move the big stuff, and enjoy your new place! Packing isn’t anyone’s favorite thing to do but it doesn’t have to be the worst. Hopefully these simple tips help you make your moving process a bit easier.
